[18:06] Satu Moreau: XD
[18:06] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: There are an excellent set of photographs supplied by the Consulate staff (with kind assistance) playing behind me of several of the lands I shall mention - it is hardly exhaustive, of course.
[18:06] Stereo Nacht stares at Mr. Mornington!
[18:06] Mr. Denny Kozlov winks at mr mornington :D
[18:06] Stereo Nacht: ;-)
[18:06] Svengali Merlin: Please do not take a picture of my face, Mr Mornington...I am still a wanted man in my native country.

[18:06] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Shall we begin?

[18:07] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach nods to the Manager
[18:07] Garnet Psaltery: If we're sitting comfortably
[18:07] Mr. Denny Kozlov: LUNAR!!! :D
[18:07] Zanya: Nice coat. ^^
[18:07] Leondra Larsson: YES, begin
[18:07] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach clears his throat
[18:07] TotalLunar Eclipse: Greetings

[18:07] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: There are as many definitions for "Steampunk" as there are authors for the story. Each person who approaches a steampunk (or gaslamp fantasy) aesthetic will have a different view, a different purpose, a different means of expressing it for themselves.

Despite that, one might say that "Steampunk" applies a vintage aesthetic and spirit of exploration to modern lives. There is joy in making, and part of the making is making it beautiful as well as functional; there may be many machines with identical functions, but each one has individual and distinctive decoration and finishing. There is joy in speed, but not in haste; an airship rally draws a crowd to ooh and ahh over the vehicles as much as to see a friend win. There is joy in knowledge for knowledge's sake, not for leverage or power; studies are made for the interest and enlightenment of the student rather than how it will profit him or her.

Second Life has had the good fortune to host many communities which call themselves "Steampunk", "Neo-Victorian" or "Gaslamp Fantasy"; each of the nations represented in Second Life has a distinct cultural identity, comprised as the ideals of their citizens. There is some cohesiveness, as there are citizens that share themes, and there are nations that share citizens. But each nation has a personality, recognizable to the residents. To touch on a few:

[18:09] Annechen Löwey: Caledon, the first substantial and longest-lasting steampunk community, presumes citizens are of gentle birth unless they declare otherwise. It is the land of the gentleman tinkerer, the scions of well-off families spending the inheritance on strange inventions and shiny brass flying machines.

[18:10] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: New Babbage epitomises a gritty, working-class, Steampunk city, where soot is virtuous and building is God.
[18:10] Garnet Psaltery: Hoorah!
[18:10] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: As opposed to Caledon's Victorian-colonial status, New Babbage is still defining its history, which comes after the collapse of a great empire, leaving the city-state with few clues as to its past.

[18:11] Annechen Löwey: Armada Breakaway takes Steampunk to the seas, where the community thrives on boat hulls cobbled together with paths and ropes into a coherent city, and commerce comes through privateering - or piracy, if you're on their bad side. Are its mermaid inhabitants creatures of fantasy, or mad science adapting humans to aquatic form?

[18:11] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Mari'Kesh Mondrago takes Steampunk further away from the Euro-American habits of the older nations by imagining a steam-and-gears approach towards living on an Arabian-influenced island, where the Genies are not magical as much as mechanically brilliant. That dancing girl over there with the light glinting off her skin? She's entirely made of metal and has a furnace in her abdomen.

[18:12] Annechen Löwey: Steelhead moves closer to the "Gaslamp fantasy" aspect of the Steampunk umbrella, as well as bringing in the "Weird West" aspects of American Steampunk. Set in the Pacific Northwest, it is home to werewolves, elves and time-travelling mad scientists fond of creating mechanical children and of blowing up dormant volcanoes.

[18:12] Mr. Denny Kozlov: Hooooooooooooooooo!
[18:12] TotalLunar Eclipse: ^^

[18:13] Annechen Löwey: Although almost anything is possible, it still follows agreed-upon rules, or has been said elsewhere: "Any sufficiently analyzed magic is indistiguishable from science."

[18:13] Zanya: *:-.,_,.-:*'´ `*. HoOoOoO!¸.*´`'*:-.,_,.-:*
[18:13] Lelani Carver: Huzzah. And hoo!
[18:13] Lynn Mimistrobell: And a gypsy!
[18:13] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach grins
[18:13] Nika Thought-werk winks at Miss Lynn.

[18:13] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Many of these lands have drawn inspiration or even citizens from what are known - or considered to be - works of fiction.

[18:13] Lynn Mimistrobell wrinkles her nose, grinning, at Nika.
[18:13] Mr. Denny Kozlov: histories :)

[18:13] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: New Babbage is home to Holmes and Watson, and has had Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stroll its streets; Caledon is ruled by Queen Victoria of England, although through her Vicereine Kamilah Hauptmann and her Guvnah Desmond Shang. Armada Breakaway is a direct descendant of Armada of Bas-Lag as documented by China Miéville. I myself have been accused of being a fictional character, although I must say once again that I hardly feel fictional to myself. A partial history of my world is being published in a non-academic form by the Professors Philip and Kaja Foglio. One can hardly blame them for trying to make a little money off their scholarship into the life of Lady Agatha Heterodyne, given how difficult tenure is to get.

[18:14] Cee Edman: One wouldn't, would one?
[18:14] Nika Thought-werk blinks at the Baron.

[18:14] Annechen Löwey: As much as the Steamlands bring in to create unique and vital communities, yet sharing a certain aesthetic and standard of principles, the Steamlands are also sharing back with the wider universe.

[18:15] Dr. Darien Mason: I thought we were all fictional?
[18:15] Mr. Denny Kozlov: some of us are frictional ... :)
[18:15] Svengali Merlin: How odd...I do not feel fictional
[18:15] Lelani Carver pinches herself to verify reality.

[18:15] Annechen Löwey: Caledon has had a colony in Blue Mars and a small First Life convention; Winterfell, which tends more towards Dark Victorian and spooky medieval, is a leader in fundraising for breast cancer charities in specific, and all the Steamlands have raised millions of lindens for Relay For Life - easily equalling the contributions of medium-sized outworld companies' teams.

[18:15] Magda Haiku is as fictional as Ms. Thursday Next!
[18:15] Nika Thought-werk cocks her head at Doctor Mason.
[18:15] CeeJay Tigerpaw: I suspect none of us actually exists, certainly I do not.

[18:15] Annechen Löwey: New Babbage has recently published a print version of stories from that city, and at one time had plans for a fully-interactive aether-site engaging participants in tales and history in various presentations. Citizens are carrying their national pride into other realms, as Steampunk conventions and events become more frequent in the First Lives of many.

[18:15] Renee Caxton looks at her typist and wonders if the typist is fictional
[18:15] Litta Nightfire: Generous of you, Baron, to tolerate the Foglios prying into your past.
[18:16] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach smiles wryly

[18:16] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: I should like to sum up by borrowing the slogan of one community, not a "Steamland" per se, but of a similar mindset, as a summation of the overarching concept of Steampunk : "Yesterday's future, today."

Thank you.

[18:16] Zanya: Well, the professor did help The Baron once. ^^
[18:16] Mr. Denny Kozlov: Hooooooooooooooooo!

[18:17] Dr. Darien Mason: Hear, hear!
[18:18] Garnet Psaltery: Do we get cake now?
[18:18] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Fraulein Widdershins will moderate questions, if any.
[18:18] Cee Edman: Pie!
[18:18] Patty Poppy: Waffles, Miss Garnet!
[18:18] Searra Weatherwax applauds.
[18:18] Saffia Widdershins: Thank you, Herr Baron and Frau Lowey
[18:18] Garnet Psaltery: *hehehehehehe*
[18:18] Cornelia Rothschild: Oh, not a repeat of the vicious Cake vs. Pie war...
[18:18] Zanya: I was told there'd be punch and pie. ^^
[18:18] Annechen Löwey: There will be a quiz next lecture.
[18:18] Patty Poppy knew she should have taken notes
[18:18] Jillian Vayandar: Is it over all ready...what an enjoyable talk!
[18:18] Magda Haiku puts her stylus down.
[18:18] Nika Thought-werk searches for a crayon "Quiz, you say?"
[18:18] Samm Florian: Name all the regions of Caledon and their chief exports.
[18:18] Christina Gilderoy: \o/ Samm Florian \ o/)
[18:18] Christina Gilderoy: Yaaaaaaaay.
[18:18] Qyndryne: Poppy i can share my notes if you would like
[18:18] Jimmy Branagh: Yeh, wos too short!

[18:19] Saffia Widdershins: Please - do help yourselves to cake
[18:19] Patty Poppy: too short
[18:19] Magda Haiku: The answer to the second is "catgirls and bewm" ...
[18:19] Nyree Rain: I want to know more about how the Consulates tie into the communities.
[18:19] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: I'm making a note of that, Herr Jimmy.
[18:19] Svengali Merlin: I noticed that the Meiville regions were not mentioned
[18:19] Thaddeus Nadeau: argh...stoopid crashing
[18:19] Mr. Denny Kozlov: I want to welcome any newcomers to the Steamlands -- we're glad to have you :)
[18:19] Saffia Widdershins: Yes, let's start with Miss Rain's question
[18:19] Annechen Löwey: We do have a varied number of exports of all the Steamlands, and a number of them explode.
[18:20] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: As were a few others, although with more time it could have been more exhaustive.
[18:20] Jillian Vayandar: My love for steampunk has really grew since being here!
[18:20] Magda Haiku: Including the catgirls.
[18:20] Cee Edman: Always glad to have newcomers to the Steamlands -- we often run out of food.
[18:20] Saffia Widdershins: Can you tell us, Herr Baron, a little about the Consulates and their work?
[18:20] Samm Florian: Don't wanna exhaust the Baron. :)
[18:20] Dr. Darien Mason: Best rephrase that, Cee...
[18:20] Miss Serra: Spoken like a true Winterfallen, Cee
[18:20] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: How the Consulates tie into the communities - it does vary depending on the location.
[18:21] Jillian Vayandar: Ah, I have always wondered that!
[18:21] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: In each one, we try to support local events, provide some of our own, and ensure other lands know what each other might be doing.
[18:21] Saffia Widdershins: How many Consulates are there now?
[18:21] Annechen Löwey: Hmm,
[18:21] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Ahhh... Frau Lowey, nine?
[18:22] Jimmy Branagh: Nine or ten
[18:22] Tensai Hilra: we are quite happy to have you a part of Steelhead Baron
[18:22] Dr. Darien Mason: Nein?
[18:22] Samm Florian giggles.
[18:22] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Unfortunately, Steeltopia and Al-Andalus have been lost recently due to economic disasters.
[18:22] Jimmy Branagh: Zhen
[18:22] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach grimaces at Herr Doktor Mason
[18:22] Nika Thought-werk frowns.
[18:22] Stereo Nacht: Steeltopia being gone, I think it's nine, now.
[18:22] Saffia Widdershins nods sadly
[18:22] Stereo Nacht: Unless I forgot some?
[18:22] Dr. Darien Mason shrugs?
[18:23] Annechen Löwey: Caledon, New Babbage, Steelhead, CDS, New Tououse,
[18:23] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Mondrago
[18:23] Samm Florian: Winterfell
[18:23] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Winterfell, of course.
[18:23] Annechen Löwey: and the smaller offices in Armada and Winterfell.
[18:23] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Mooter.
[18:23] Annechen Löwey: And the table out in Seraph.
[18:23] Miss Serra smiles
[18:23] Annechen Löwey smiles.
[18:23] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach grins
[18:23] Svengali Merlin: CDS?
[18:23] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Fraulein Ceejay has supplied us a space in the future.
[18:24] Saffia Widdershins: A step into the future ....
[18:24] Jillian Vayandar: Wow...I did not know that
[18:24] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Confederation of Democratic Sims.
[18:24] Svengali Merlin: Ahhh...thank you.
[18:24] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: It is the oldest representative government on the grid.
[18:24] Jillian Vayandar: I was lost until I found Caledon!
[18:24] Saffia Widdershins: and a fascinating hybrid of Ancient Rome and Germany
[18:24] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Neufreistadt reminds me much of home in some ways, in its looks.
[18:25] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Ja, the highlands are European, the lowlands are Classical.
[18:25] Annechen Löwey smiles, "And in the way they debate."
[18:25] Annechen Löwey: Fewer explosions, perhaps.
[18:25] Jillian Vayandar: lol
[18:26] Nika Thought-werk looks at Miss Tensai and smiles.
[18:26] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Al-Andalus was a social-political experiment originally founded by some from the CDS, but developed into a more educational area instead.
[18:26] Tensai Hilra: it's been at least a week since a structure blew up ;)
[18:26] Jillian Vayandar: Do you have a LM for this place, Sir?
[18:26] Vic Mornington: :D
[18:26] Annechen Löwey: It was an admirable experiment, and very enlightening.
[18:26] Samm Florian: What kinda experiment?
[18:27] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: The original government was sharia law of a sort.
[18:27] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: As I recall.
[18:27] Mr. Denny Kozlov: Allo miss samm :)
[18:27] Nyree Rain: Samm is used to Caledon experiment, which usually end with an explosion of some sort.
[18:27] Zanya: Sharia?
[18:27] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Islamic.
[18:27] Annechen Löwey: And it did represent the Andalucian area in culture and architecture.
[18:27] Zanya: Ahh.
[18:27] Dr. Darien Mason: Fundamentalist Koranic law
[18:27] Saffia Widdershins: There is a sad lack on Umgebindehausen in Neuerfreistadt
[18:27] Saffia Widdershins: but that is true throughout the grid, sadly
[18:28] Vic Mornington: umge what? you been drinkin saffia? o.O :D
[18:28] Annechen Löwey chuckles.
[18:28] Jimmy Branagh chuckles
[18:28] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Brilliant building, although old style prims and the like. Nowadays, Al-Andalus would have to be rebuilt for practical reasons, if the support was there.
[18:28] David Abbot: Probably your coffee, Vic.
[18:28] Vic Mornington: LMAO
[18:28] Samm Florian can pronounce Umge… better'n Neuerfreistadt I reckon
[18:28] Nika Thought-werk blinks.
[18:28] Samm Florian: Yay prims!
[18:28] Saffia Widdershins smiles
[18:28] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: I did not mention Antiquity specifically either.
[18:29] Cee Edman: One thing about SL -- we really have to become internationalists quickly.
[18:29] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: They have a different sort of community building, although just as active when ships are involved.
[18:29] Saffia Widdershins: an oold lament of mine that there's not enough of the rich diversity of European architecture on the grid
[18:29] Stereo Nacht: Samm Florian:Argh! Antiquity! I forgot to contact their foreign minister... X-/ )
[18:30] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: One of the benefits of Mari'Kesh Mondrago, Fraulein Widdershins.
[18:30] Annechen Löwey: This is a major theme in the grid - we rebuild as the technology allows, but we also try to recreate the best of our cultures here, every time.
[18:30] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach raises an eyebrow at Fraulein Stereo
[18:30] Saffia Widdershins: what would you see as the difference with Antiquities communities as opposed to, say, Caledon?
[18:30] Vic Mornington: building styles, especially EU and UK victorian era styles sometimes is hard to replicate...i had a night mare of a time building Brunel....
[18:30] Erehwon Yoshikawa's ears burn.
[18:30] Stereo Nacht: Sorry Sir. Event planning stuff. The typist has been keeping me away too much.)
[18:31] Garnet Psaltery: Is that why you keep building it, Mr M?
[18:31] Lelani Carver: Well, then.
[18:31] Vic Mornington: :D
[18:31] Garnet Psaltery: :o)
[18:31] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Antiquity's tendency towards different individual island-owners, or islands owned by various courts leads it to be less cohesive than even Caledon's diversity.
[18:31] Annechen Löwey: Antiquity is an earlier era, as well.
[18:31] Annechen Löwey: Though it does share a love of seafaring.
[18:32] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: However, their interests in common... ja.
[18:32] Lynn Mimistrobell: Are there any good Byzantine sims, is anyone aware?
[18:32] Annechen Löwey: and... perhaps more wealth redistribution specialsits per capita.
[18:32] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: The earliest of which I'm aware is Renaissance Island, until one travels back to Imperial Rome.
[18:33] Mr. Denny Kozlov giggles at "wealth redistribution specialists" :)
[18:33] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Between, I have no information.
[18:33] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Well said, Frau Lowey.
[18:33] Saffia Widdershins smiles
[18:33] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: It has made them natural allies with Winterfell.
[18:34] Annechen Löwey: just as there are no mad scientists - only those whose vision exceeds the social limits.
[18:34] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Erm... the sailing, not the wealth distribution.
[18:34] Miss Serra laughs
[18:34] Saffia Widdershins laughs
[18:34] Annechen Löwey snickers.
[18:34] Cee Edman: We can redistribute wealth with the best of 'em, Baron!
[18:34] Dr. Darien Mason coughs.
[18:34] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach chuckles
[18:34] Saffia Widdershins: And there are mer communities, I believe, as there have been - and perhaps still are - in New Babbage
[18:35] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: There has been work on the mer activities recently.
[18:35] Magda Haiku gives Lord Aislinn a drink.
[18:35] Jillian Vayandar: oh, I would like to visit them!
[18:35] Nyree Rain: There is also a group of Mermaids of Caledon.
[18:35] Garnet Psaltery: I think the mer were eaten
[18:35] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Armada Breakaway also has mer.
[18:35] Miss Serra: Winterfell even has a few recluse Merpeople.. I think that is the core of Winterfell... the recluses
[18:35] Cee Edman has had too many already, Mrs. Haiku
[18:35] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: New Babbage has had some dark mer in the deeper waters.
[18:35] Annechen Löwey: There are many interlocking communities throughout the Steamlands,
[18:35] Magda Haiku: Aha ...
[18:35] Nyree Rain: I hope the recluses are not brown.
[18:35] Svengali Merlin: The last time I saw Mer in New babbage, one of them tried to eat me
[18:35] Mr. Denny Kozlov: well for that matter there are some fascinating varieties of sapient beings throughout the steamlands :)
[18:35] Miss Serra: Samm Florian:only a few are brown, watch out for those ones)
[18:36] Magda Haiku stops up her ears.
[18:36] Annechen Löwey: Sometimes one mus tbe very careful about invitations to tea, yes.
[18:36] Cee Edman: Samm Florian:recluses=reclusim=reclusen/reclusenne)
[18:36] Saffia Widdershins: Mr Merlin and I had an encounter with them, actually. As did Mr Mornington.
[18:36] Jillian Vayandar: Yikes....Thank you for the warning
[18:36] Saffia Widdershins: And, of course, Mr Biggins ....
[18:36] Vic Mornington chuckles "good old Biggins"
[18:36] Svengali Merlin: It took me weeks to repair the hole one of them chewed in the hull of my submersible
[18:36] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: One of the most interesting aspects which unites the Steamlands is inclusivity.
[18:37] Litta Nightfire: The mer at the Blue Mermaid are singularly friendly ... but I suppose that's to be expected.
[18:37] Nika Thought-werk: I like to dance with the mer.
[18:37] Miss Serra sighs and quietly steps away for Winterfell business
[18:37] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: This contrasts them to the 'historical sims'.
[18:37] Saffia Widdershins nods
[18:37] Svengali Merlin boos and hisses at "historical sims"
[18:37] Cee Edman: As I said, we welcome NEWCOMERS because we often run out of food. As long a there are newcomers, oltimers have no need to fear.
[18:37] Annechen Löwey: There are many such, and very dedicated to their accuracy.
[18:37] Nyree Rain notes that eating someone could be considered a form of inclusiveness.
[18:37] Garnet Psaltery: *hehehehehehe*
[18:38] TotalLunar Eclipse: Depends on what one considers 'historical' is it the buildings themselves or the community and feel as a whole?
[18:38] Jimmy Branagh groks
[18:38] TotalLunar Eclipse: or RP
[18:38] Litta Nightfire slips Sir Cee a steak sandwich and smiles reassuringly at all and sundry.
[18:38] Thaddeus Nadeau slightly inches away from Cee.
[18:38] Nyree Rain: lol Jimmy
[18:38] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: There are places such as... ah.. Deadwood and Berlin who are pleasant enough in population, but adhere to a strictly human-normal appearance.
[18:38] Cornelia Rothschild: Yes, I remember the time a friend and I toured one of the historical RP sims. They insisted on no clockworks. I took my key out and wore clothes to cover my joints and did my best "100% human" impression.
[18:38] Jimmy Branagh winks
[18:38] Annechen Löwey: The Jaegers have orders to not eat anything that can converse intelligently.
[18:39] Nyree Rain: Which allows them to devour quite a few people, Miss Lowey.
[18:39] Svengali Merlin: That rules out most newbies
[18:39] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Their history, of course; not Europa's. This is why the Furries did not surprise us overmuch.
[18:39] Mr. Denny Kozlov: oh dear, that may leave out my uncle Nebbish then :)
[18:39] CeeJay Tigerpaw perks up his whiskiers and considers switching to Tiger form, but realizes that he has forgotten his jar of hollandaise, and reconsiders.
[18:39] Lynn Mimistrobell need to be quick about appearing intelligent then.
[18:39] Litta Nightfire muses that some Lindens might be in danger from jaegers.
[18:39] Cee Edman: But it is the Jaegers' interpretation of "intelligently', is it not?
[18:39] Annechen Löwey: Politicians are not on the menu for other reasons.
[18:39] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Heh.
[18:39] Samm Florian: Indigestion
[18:40] Stereo Nacht playfully slaps Miss Lynn: "They like your storytelling too much to eat you, silly!"
[18:40] Mr. Denny Kozlov: The jaegers are pretty discerning about shmott guys and gals :)
[18:40] Svengali Merlin: I thought that all of the hot air made them hard to catch
[18:40] Zanya: Also, you have plenty of nice hats for them to respect you. ^^
[18:40] Nyree Rain: I've always found the Jaegers most charming.
[18:40] Lynn Mimistrobell grins at Stereo.
[18:40] Lelani Carver: They do like nize hets. Maybe they wouldn't eat a haberdasher.
[18:40] Cornelia Rothschild: Yes, I find the Jaegers adorable.
[18:40] Annechen Löwey: But this is why the grid can accomodate us all. There are places enough for all.
[18:40] Erehwon Yoshikawa: They are wonderful dancers.
[18:40] Satu Moreau: ^_^ HOoray for Jagers!
[18:41] Stereo Nacht: Hoooo!
[18:41] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach looks wry
[18:41] Mr. Denny Kozlov: Hooooooooooooooooo!
[18:41] Dr. Darien Mason: *:-.,_,.-:*'´ `*. HoOoOoO!¸.*´`'*:-.,_,.-:*
[18:41] Zanya: *:-.,_,.-:*'´ `*. HoOoOoO!¸.*´`'*:-.,_,.-:*
[18:41] Nika Thought-werk smiles.
[18:41] Mr. Denny Kozlov giggles
[18:41] Staphe: hooo
[18:41] Samm Florian: Don't look rye, Herr Baron! That's a good way t'be eaten!
[18:41] Mr. Denny Kozlov snerks
[18:41] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: I have found objections to Jaegermonsters here to be entirely NOT based on the fact that they are, or can be, brutal bloodthirsty warriors.
[18:41] Litta Nightfire looks for Miss Samm's "pun off" button
[18:42] Cee Edman: Oh, we would never object to bloodthiorsty warriors, Jarger or otherwise!
[18:42] Zanya breaths a sigh of relief.
[18:42] Annechen Löwey: We also find that the flexibility of the Steamlands allow there to be a place many can be welcomed.
[18:42] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Well. Fraulein Widdershins, what else?
[18:43] Nyree Rain: Wow, that photo us now was taken by someone with a much larger draw distance than I've ever been able to use.
[18:43] Saffia Widdershins: I would like to know whether there are any plans for joint events to foster the connectedness of the Steamlands
[18:43] Stereo Nacht grins wide
[18:44] Annechen Löwey: Ah, something after Relay, for one.
[18:44] Annechen Löwey smiles.
[18:44] Saffia Widdershins: I am remembering, for example, the Grand Tours - which allowed us to see some fascinating parts of the Steamlands
[18:44] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: We have an RFL event we are hosting for the summer and Fraulein Stereo can speak on our Consulate Game Days.
[18:44] Saffia Widdershins: some of which were wholly new to me
[18:44] Cee Edman muses about the Boobiethon.
[18:44] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Ach, the Grand Tour. Frau Lowey is much better at them than I, unfortunately.
[18:44] Patty Poppy: there is a full day Swashbuckler's event June 30th. that encompasses many of the steamlands
[18:44] Nyree Rain: Next weekend the Swashbuckler for Life will be holding such an event
[18:44] Litta Nightfire: Fleet Week!
[18:45] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Next week already? Danke.
[18:45] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Fleet Week, originated by New Babbage, but shared out in turn.
[18:45] Annechen Löwey: The Grand Tours have been some of the most... extensive events we have had.
[18:45] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: There is also the Aether Salon.
[18:45] Jimmy Branagh: ((brb))
[18:45] Annechen Löwey rubs the bridge of her nose.
[18:45] Saffia Widdershins grins
[18:45] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Again, originating in New Babbage, but it has had guests from everywhere.
[18:45] Cee Edman does not meantion the "connectedness" arising from the Steamlands' invasion of mainland.
[18:45] Saffia Widdershins: Indeed
[18:46] Saffia Widdershins: I have danced my way through a couple I think
[18:46] Cornelia Rothschild misses the invasions.
[18:46] Svengali Merlin sighs. "Real life calls...must depart."
[18:46] Saffia Widdershins: one needs a carefully planned wardrobe
[18:46] Cornelia Rothschild: And the traditional mass griefings.
[18:46] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Gute Nacht, Herr Merlin.
[18:46] Annechen Löwey: The Consulate actually has an office on the mainland.
[18:46] Saffia Widdershins: and several pairs of dancing slippers
[18:46] Cornelia Rothschild: Not that I was ever sucked into griefing by our esteemed leaders, heavens no.
[18:46] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Heh.
[18:47] Saffia Widdershins: whereabouts, Frau Lowey?
[18:47] Mr. Denny Kozlov: certainly not, perish forbid :D
[18:47] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: I would think the issue would be, other than in Bay City, finding a part of the mainland that would care.
[18:47] Cornelia Rothschild laughs.
[18:47] Annechen Löwey: Mooter, on the Jeogot continent.
[18:47] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach muses over invading Bay City after all.
[18:47] Cornelia Rothschild big eyes. Please include me.
[18:48] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: We also have a small parcel in Europa, for amusement's sake.
[18:48] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Nothing on it but a flag so far.
[18:48] Cee Edman: Caledon invaded Bay City this year.
[18:48] Annechen Löwey chuckles.
[18:48] Stereo Nacht: About the Game Day, we are trying to have events in as many Steamlands as possible. We have already set that there will be a regatta in Armada Breakaway, for example, but if you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them!
[18:48] Magda Haiku smiles at Severus.
[18:48] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: When did Caledon do that? I quite missed the notice.
[18:48] Erehwon Yoshikawa thought about setting up a Mondrago Embassy for slaves wanting to escape from a certain RP theme involving awful novels.
[18:48] Cee Edman: Ah, it was a sneak attack, Baron
[18:48] Mr. Denny Kozlov: I think there was rather more talking than invading :D
[18:48] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Bah.
[18:48] Vic Mornington: rofl!!!!
[18:48] Staphe: Have a Bueno noches all I am exhausted
[18:48] Dr. Darien Mason: An excellent idea Miss Yoshikawa!
[18:49] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: I owe Fraulein McCann several visits.
[18:49] Mr. Denny Kozlov: farewell staphe :)
[18:49] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Gute Nacht, those leaving.
[18:49] Cee Edman: They were successful, until discovered, and then they fled, I believe.
[18:49] Nika Thought-werk claps for Miss Yoshikawa ... or she would if she could read minds.
[18:49] Zanya: I love that idea, Erewhon!
[18:49] Lelani Carver: So do I, Erewhon
[18:49] Stereo Nacht: Also, we will soon starting to put invitations for a very special "Dinner with the Baron" for auction, 18 invitations total, 2 in 9 different cities.
[18:49] Garnet Psaltery: Must go as well - too many events in one day! Cheerio all!
[18:49] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Perhaps we can do a better invasion later.
[18:49] Saffia Widdershins: I would have thought Bay City one of the more civilised areas
[18:49] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Gute Nacht, Your Grace.
[18:49] Lelani Carver: Sorry, Ms Erewhon, for the misspell. Samm Florian:glances at her typist, who has the grace to blush)
[18:50] Patty Poppy bids farewell - thank you Herr Baron and Frau Lowey
[18:50] Zanya: <-- swords work in Gorean-meters for those masters who foolishly try to follow.
[18:50] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Bay City seems to be the closest to being a 'Steamland', although nearer in time to Seraph City.
[18:50] Vic Mornington: its is saffia, a whole buncha rp'ing timelords live in it, where theres timelords, its usually a settled environment....
[18:50] Cornelia Rothschild: Goodnight, Auntie Poppy!
[18:50] Saffia Widdershins: There are parts of the mainland that I suspect one could infiltrate and occupy for several months
[18:50] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Gute Nacht, Duchess Patty.
[18:50] Saffia Widdershins: without anyone noticing ...
[18:50] Annechen Löwey: Invasions need either more time to plan, or more alcohol.
[18:50] Mr. Denny Kozlov: farewell miss poppy
[18:50] Stereo Nacht: Good night Those leaving!
[18:50] Zanya: Or both, if possible!
[18:50] Samm Florian: Nini Poppy!
[18:51] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Here is a difference - the Steamlands set out refreshments.
[18:51] Jillian Vayandar: waves
[18:51] Thaddeus Nadeau: like a merry band of squatters :)
[18:51] Cornelia Rothschild has a pith helmet. Let's do this.
[18:51] Vic Mornington: gotta have coffee and tea....and cakes....preferably battenberg cake
[18:51] Lelani Carver: I have a foothold on a rail line. It's amusing watching the tanks and lost ice cream trucks roll by.
[18:51] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: I overwork my staff - I can use more planners.
[18:51] Magda Haiku: Mmmm ... battenberg.
[18:52] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Come to us with ideas, you will get support.
[18:52] Samm Florian: Mazes everywhere! :)
[18:52] Nika Thought-werk smiles at the Baron ... she understood everything he said for the last two sentences.
[18:52] Nyree Rain blushes, having missed all recent meetings due to other commitments.
[18:52] Jimmy Branagh: ((kback))
[18:52] Stereo Nacht grimaces a bit, half playful, half annoyed :-P
[18:52] Vic Mornington: ok for all you blogging type folks... http://www.flickr.com/photos/victor1st/sets/72157630180349906/ tried to get as many pics of individuals as i could but a lot of folks skins just aint loading for me...
[18:53] Saffia Widdershins: There is Battenberg cake on the cake stands, Mr Morningon.
[18:53] Annechen Löwey: One would hope the clothing did rez, at least.
[18:53] Saffia Widdershins: I asked epecially
[18:53] Vic Mornington: ohhhhhhhhhhhh
[18:53] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach chuckles
[18:53] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Any last questions?
[18:54] Saffia Widdershins: I think I should say something very sad
[18:54] Qyndryne: Uhm I think someone earlier asked if Meiville fits anywhere in with the Steamlands or if they are a completely separate group
[18:54] Saffia Widdershins: these are the last questions that will be asked in this auditoria
[18:54] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: I must tell you all that for those not familiar with it, the AEther Salon of New Babbage resumes in September, with discussions similar to this on specific topics.
[18:55] Mr. Denny Kozlov: oh dear...
[18:55] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Their community is mysterious to me.
[18:55] Saffia Widdershins: This is the very last talk to be held here at SL9B
[18:55] Cornelia Rothschild: The best for last! :D
[18:55] Mr. Denny Kozlov: Ah, we are the finale!
[18:55] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: I am honoured, Fraulein Widdershins.
[18:55] Nika Thought-werk smiles and nods.
[18:55] Samm Florian sighs in relief. There're so many much sadder things ya could've said.
[18:55] Mr. Denny Kozlov: Hooooooooooooooooo!
[18:55] Zanya: *:-.,_,.-:*'´ `*. HoOoOoO!¸.*´`'*:-.,_,.-:*
[18:55] Renee Caxton applauds
[18:55] Vic Mornington: i got a question for ya Baron...
[18:55] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: I would like to know more about Mieville, and would appreciate input.
[18:55] Saffia Widdershins: Absolutely
[18:55] Dr. Darien Mason: *:-.,_,.-:*'´ `*. HoOoOoO!¸.*´`'*:-.,_,.-:*
[18:55] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Herr Victor?
[18:55] Nika Thought-werk claps happily.
[18:56] Lelani Carver: I hope to attend more Aether Salon events in the future. This season there were scheduling problems for me.
[18:56] Saffia Widdershins: one brings the curtin down on the climax
[18:56] Annechen Löwey: I have not been in New Toulouse as often as I would like, either.
[18:56] Myheartliesin3rings Mint: Ahoy all~
[18:56] Nyree Rain: Perryn Peterson is the person to contact about Mieville.
[18:56] Nyree Rain: He is very nice.
[18:56] Qyndryne nods
[18:56] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Fraulein Nyree, I'll expect your report.
[18:56] Saffia Widdershins: Hello Mr Mint
[18:56] Lelani Carver: And he runs the STEAM and other hunts well. Always an enjoyable exploration.
[18:57] Vic Mornington: with steampunk now more "Mainstream" than ever before, what with BioShock: INfinity having a steampunk theme, and the new Bethesda game "Dishonored" have pure steampunk Samm Florian:even walking mechanical tank men) do you see an influx of new steampunk fans coming into SL when these major title games gets released?
[18:57] Annechen Löwey chuckles.
[18:57] Qyndryne: right now they are doing a steampunk fishing contest
[18:57] Satu Moreau: I'm not sure, but I think Mieville considers itself part of the Steamlands, but most people of the rest of the Steamlands always seem to forget it's there.
[18:57] Satu Moreau: But Mr. Peterson is the one to ask for sure
[18:57] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: They're rather quiet, Herr Satu.
[18:57] Annechen Löwey: Quite possible Mr Mornington.
[18:57] Satu Moreau: The Mieville school is having a 4th of July presentation this summer though
[18:57] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Herr Victor, anything is possible. Bitte, explain the Babbage term 'Ten-noobs' for us in relation to this.
[18:57] Scripted Haiku: I wonder if we ought not to spend some time defining *exactly* what should and what should not be permitted under the banner of steampunk?
[18:58] Saffia Widdershins: what do you anticipate for the coming year?
[18:58] Thaddeus Nadeau: He does organize the infamous STEAM hunt, I believe?
[18:58] Satu Moreau: Our magic lantern shows are fun
[18:58] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Far too elusive, Herr Haiku.
[18:58] Lelani Carver: Yes, Thaddeus
[18:58] Willow Leafstorm: I explored some of Mieville last week.
[18:58] Jimmy Branagh: Yes, th' Christmas one was very good.
[18:58] Vic Mornington: ohhhhhhh dear...the Tennoobs....
[18:58] Saffia Widdershins: And ... do you think we'll see more steampunk communities on altenative grids
[18:58] Dr. Darien Mason: That's an infamously difficult task, Mrs. Haiku.
[18:58] Thaddeus Nadeau: Thank you, Lelani.
[18:58] Nyree Rain: Some of the Mieville builds are awesome.
[18:58] Mr. Denny Kozlov: Mr Haiku, trying to cause unrest I see :D
[18:58] Scripted Haiku: Perhaps then a manifesto that the SL steamlands can agree upon?
[18:58] Cornelia Rothschild wrinkles up her nose. "I'm not fond of rules, save for the fact that they give me something to rebel against."
[18:59] Tensai Hilra: Defining steampunk is to kill it
[18:59] Willow Leafstorm: The huge theater is nice.
[18:59] Dr. Darien Mason: Guvna Shang has a Caledon outpost in his own Minecraft server now.
[18:59] Litta Nightfire: Mieville is very steampunk. Perhaps they are so busy they don't have energy to engage with the rest of the steamlands?
[18:59] Magda Haiku grins at Mr. Haiku.
[18:59] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Elsewhere? Certainly.
[18:59] Cornelia Rothschild nods at Tensai.
[18:59] Samm Florian: Is there anythin' ya wanna label as NOT steampunk?
[18:59] Zanya: The term is used far too much in marketplace descriptions to draw in searches, but as for quantifying it into definable terms, good luck. ^^;
[18:59] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Lady Aislinn, we shall look into this.
[18:59] Myheartliesin3rings Mint: I agree Tensai
[18:59] Tensai Hilra: it is about stylized innovation. if it is steampunk, it says it itself.
[18:59] Mr. Denny Kozlov: Mieville does a very industrious job with the Steam hunts :)
[18:59] Nika Thought-werk feels it is probably time to depart, as her ghost has writing to do.
[19:00] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Not? People who stick gears on clothing and make no attempt at manners or building appropriate to the concept.
[19:00] CeeJay Tigerpaw has a slight Steampunk theme in Winterfell Borderlands, but visitors will have to hunt some to find it.
[19:00] Annechen Löwey chuckles.
[19:00] Cornelia Rothschild: Be well, Miss Nika!
[19:00] Nika Thought-werk curtsies quickly and departs.
[19:00] Jimmy Branagh: Noight Miss Nika!
[19:00] Mr. Denny Kozlov: farewell miss nika
[19:00] Samm Florian's experience with Steampunk has been t'learn by doin'.
[19:00] Erehwon Yoshikawa: And steampunk doesn't mean Victorian England!
[19:00] Stereo Nacht: Good night Miss Nika!
[19:00] Cornelia Rothschild: Especially in an open, shared environment like SL - imposing a set of definitions will only serve to exclude and introduce a sense of bad feeling, I think.
[19:00] Zanya: Night, Nika!
[19:00] Litta Nightfire nods
[19:01] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Fraulein Magistrate knows that well, heh.
[19:01] Jimmy Branagh: Oy've got ta run too. Thenk you Herr Baron, Frau Lowey, and Miss Saffia!
[19:01] Annechen Löwey nods.
[19:01] Scripted Haiku: Perhaps, but on the other hand, it could serve to strengthen the core
[19:01] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Gute Nacht, all those leaving.
[19:01] Jimmy Branagh: Noight all!
[19:01] Mr. Denny Kozlov: to paraphrase a rather stored defintion, I can't define it but I know it when I see it :)
[19:01] Saffia Widdershins: It's been lovely to see you all here!
[19:01] Samm Florian: I jes wonder if, when folks ask fer a definition t'be laid down, they're really askin' fer an anti-definition.
[19:01] Cee Edman: Farewell all -- we must dash.
[19:01] Jimmy Branagh waves and dedifferentiates
[19:01] Annechen Löwey: That could be, Miss Samm.
[19:01] Cornelia Rothschild: Good night, Jimmy!
[19:01] Litta Nightfire: <curtsey>
[19:01] Mr. Denny Kozlov: farewell those departing
[19:01] CeeJay Tigerpaw nods and departs.
[19:02] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: I believe it is one of those 'I know it when I see it' situations.
[19:02] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach looks wry again
[19:02] Stereo Nacht: Good night those leaving!
[19:02] Mr. Denny Kozlov grins
[19:02] Cornelia Rothschild laughs.</i>
[19:02] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Not very good for newcomers, but learning by doing.
[19:02] Scripted Haiku: So steampunk is the new pornography??
[19:02] Samm Florian looks pumpernickel
[19:02] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Hah.
[19:02] Annechen Löwey: oh, sweet lightning...
[19:02] Zanya: Heheh.
[19:02] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: It is the new 'art', how is that?
[19:02] Vic Mornington: Steampunk is something the big game designers are now latching onto so they can rake money in
[19:02] Stereo Nacht starts humming "put some gears on it..."
[19:02] Lelani Carver: Ooof!! that was a crashy one.
[19:02] Erehwon Yoshikawa: I must blink away too. Sunday night dance in Mondrago. Thank you for organizing this, Ms. Widdershins.
[19:03] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Danke, Magistrate.
[19:03] Tensai Hilra: heh.. too true Vic
[19:03] Stereo Nacht: Good night Miss Yoshikawa!
[19:03] Annechen Löwey: There are many roads to the end.
[19:03] Erehwon Yoshikawa curtseys to the Barron and vanishes in a puff of steam and smoke.
[19:03] Samm Florian: "Stylized innovation" might describe Apple computers too, btw.
[19:03] Stereo Nacht: And I should be leaving too... The week-end has been short and busy... :-Samm Florian:
[19:03] Zanya: That's a double-edged sword, but ultimately the exposure will be a good thing. ^^
[19:03] Tensai Hilra: very true Samm
[19:03] Mr. Denny Kozlov: farewell miss stereo
[19:03] Zanya: Good night, Stereo. ^^
[19:03] Stereo Nacht: Good night Herr Baron, Frau Löwey, and everyone!
[19:04] Annechen Löwey: Goodnight, Captain Stereo.
[19:04] Samm Florian wonders if someone's written a Guide to Steampunk Design. Reckon so.
[19:04] Cornelia Rothschild: There's The Steampunk Bible.
[19:04] Jillian Vayandar: I too must go....very interesting talk and I thank you
[19:04] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: There is always room for innovation.
[19:04] Tensai Hilra: the best guide to steampunk is to immerse yourself in what is accepted as steampunk. then derive
[19:04] Annechen Löwey nods to those departing.
[19:05] Zanya: It's true that a lot of people will wander in who don't take it seriously, but along with them many will find a new love in these lands, and stay long after the rabble have left. ^^
[19:05] Jillian Vayandar: I have that here..!
[19:05] Saffia Widdershins: I believe we are coming to the end of our discussion now
[19:05] Jillian Vayandar: Night all...
[19:05] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: We are being shooed away. Take your battenburgs quickly!
[19:05] Cornelia Rothschild: Thank you again for such an interesting one. :D
[19:05] TotalLunar Eclipse: A random question, how old are some of the communities?
[19:05] Saffia Widdershins: and I old like to thank Baon Wulfenbach and Frau Lowey for joining us
[19:05] Annechen Löwey: When the haircut act is on the stage, it's time to wrap it up, Madame Widdershins?
[19:05] Samm Florian: Caledon is 6, I think?
[19:05] Annechen Löwey smiles.
[19:05] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Ja, Winterfell is about the same.
[19:06] Saffia Widdershins smiles
[19:06] Lynn Mimistrobell: I think that a strength of steampunk is a willingness of the community to accept those who are not strcit steampunk, that do not reallt 'get into it' personally, but respect it. If that makes sense.
[19:06] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Roma, outside of the Steamlands is almost as old.
[19:06] Tensai Hilra: as is steelhead
[19:06] Nyree Rain: I like that, Lynn.
[19:06] Samm Florian: Babbage is newer.
[19:06] TotalLunar Eclipse: Steelhead, at its name change is 6. But the sim is older.
[19:06] Zanya: ^^
[19:06] Qyndryne nods
[19:06] Scripted Haiku: Yes, Desmond landed in what is now Caledon and handed out malware infested prim blankets to the natives there 6 years ago.
[19:06] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Steelhead has had some changes during its time.
[19:06] Lynn Mimistrobell smiles at Nyree.
[19:06] Magda Haiku coughs.
[19:06] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: New Babbage was founded after Caledon.
[19:06] Samm Florian: I reckon all of em are at least 2 years old 'cause that's 'bout as old as I am.
[19:06] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Armada and Mondrago are the youngest.
[19:07] Samm Florian: Oh, ''cept Mondrago I reckon.
[19:07] Scripted Haiku: You don't look a day younger than 10, Miss Samm
[19:07] Samm Florian grins.
[19:07] Magda Haiku: 10 and a half!
[19:07] Samm Florian: Discussions of age in SL are always tough.
[19:08] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: I do believe we are done.
[19:09] Baron Klaus Wulfenbach: Danke for your attendance.
